The EU’s top data protection regulatory body, the Article 29 Working Party, released a set of frequently asked questions on the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which governs cross-border data processing activity. The Working Party also published a set of guidelines for identifying a controller or processor’s lead supervisory authority. Both documents flesh out certain concepts and definitions of the GDPR, such as what activities constitute cross-border processing of personal data, and provide examples.

On December 7, 2016, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) adopted an opinion on the European Commission’s draft guidelines on the collaborative economy and online platforms, calling for more clarity and ambition.

Important Action by Regulatory Agency

The Joint Committee of the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) is asking for public input on the potential benefits and risks of Big Data for consumers and financial firms. The ESAs also seek comment on whether existing EU legislation on data protection, competition and consumer protection adequately cover the use of Big Data and its technologies. Feedback was due by March 7, 2017.
